The top three best-performing oil companies in 2025 were the refiners Valero Energy, Phillips 66, and Marathon Petroleum.Valero EnergySan Antonio, Texas-based Valero has led the pack, logging 46.5% gains this year. The company’s refinery utilization rate stood at 97% in the third quarter, backed by strong global demand and persistently low inventory levels despite high utilization rates. The company’s ethanol segment also logged record production in the third quarter, further boosting its earnings.“Although OPEC began unwinding their production cuts in April, much of that volume was offset by an increase in summer power burn. So it wasn't really until September that we saw any meaningful increase in the export volume from OPEC,” Valero Chief Operating Officer Garry Simmons said in October.Marathon PetroleumThe biggest U.S. refiner by capacity has closely followed Valero, with 39.6% gains. However, the stock took a hit earlier in November, after its third-quarter earnings missed Wall Street’s estimates, hurt by weak results in the renewable diesel segment. Last year, the analysts predicted global oil demand would peak by 2034, but also flagged the potential for growth to top out six years later due to slow electric-vehicle adoption.Goldman reportedly attributed the roadblocks to low-carbon technology and infrastructure adoption, along with rising energy demand, to the updated outlook for fresh growth projections. Oil Prices Gain After Ukrainian Attack On Russian Oil Depot — Goldman Sachs Grows More Bullish On Long-Term Demand

The anticipated glut would constitute nearly 4% of global demand.In its Oil Market Report for November, the IEA stated that global supply is rising faster than consumption, with output set to expand by nearly 3.1 million bpd in 2025 and 2.5 million bpd in 2026 on average, to reach 108.7 million bpd. Non-OPEC+ production is expected to account for 1.7 million bpd in 2025 and 1.2 million bpd of the growth in 2026.Saudi Arabia Drives 2025 Oil Supply&nbsp;OPEC+ and non-OPEC sources have contributed roughly equally to this gain, with Saudi Arabia alone adding close to 1.5 million bpd this year through October.OPEC+, which includes the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, Russia, and their allies, has been reportedly ramping up production since April. IEA Forecasts Global Oil Market Surplus Of Up To 4.09 million BPD In 2026

Brent crude prices hovered around $62 per barrel at the time of writing, after a 4% decline in the previous session.<h2 class="st-heading-2">OPEC+ Issues Surplus Warning</h2>The selloff came after the producer group OPEC+ said global oil markets moved into a surplus in the third quarter, contrary to its earlier forecasts of a deficit. The group, which includes Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, said in its monthly report that world oil production exceeded demand by 500,000 barrels per day during the quarter, compared with a 400,000-barrel-per-day shortfall projected earlier.The group also estimates that supplies outside OPEC and its allies rose by 890,000 bpd in the period, with the U.S. accounting for much of the growth. The outlook comes after OPEC+ said it would pause rapid production hikes for the first three months of the year due to seasonality.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Chevron CEO Is Alarmed</h2>Mike Wirth, the top boss of oil major Chevron, warned that oil prices will feel more pressure in 2026 than liquefied natural gas prices due to OPEC+ oversupply.<blockquote>“Oil prices in 2026 are likely to feel more pressure than LNG prices,” Wirth said to Bloomberg Television. “There’s a lot of oil supply that’s coming back from the OPEC+ countries that have been holding supply back.”</blockquote>Earlier, the producer group also trimmed its 2026 demand forecast for OPEC+ crude by 100,000 bpd from prior forecasts, after raising its non-OPEC+ supply estimates.
