He said this could have “rattled the markets a bit.”<h2 class="st-heading-2">Retail Investors Step Back</h2>Retail investors have taken a step back, even as institutions remain enthusiastic buyers. According to a Reuters&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/retail-consumer/retail-investors-show-less-conviction-buying-us-stock-market-dips-2025-11-17/">report</a> citing analysts at Bank of America, institutions were net buyers of broad-market ETFs earlier this month. However, retail investors were net sellers for the first time since September, according to the firm.The Schwab Trading Activity Index, which measures retail investor sentiment, has declined since January, from 49.45 to 39.68, before staging a recovery to 48.12.Meanwhile, U.S. equities were up in Friday’s midday trade. At the time of writing, the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/SPY">SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF</a> (SPY), which tracks the S&amp;P 500 index, was up 1.16%, the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/QQQ">Invesco QQQ Trust ETF</a> (QQQ) gained 0.91%, while the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/DIA">SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF Trust</a> (DIA) rose 1.43%. Meme Stocks And Retail Favorites Come Under Pressure As Wall Street Remains Cautious

Kopin Corporation (KOPN)&nbsp;shares edged 0.7% lower in pre-market after the company announced its longtime Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Rich Sneider, is retiring after more than 25 years with the&nbsp;firm.&nbsp;Sneider will remain in his role until a replacement is named and&nbsp;will assist with the transition. The company is launching a search for a new CFO&nbsp;and is considering both internal and external candidates.Kopin is a U.S.-based technology firm specializing in high-performance microdisplays and optical solutions across defense, industrial, medical, and consumer markets.Sneider’s retirement follows recent positive developments for the company. Kopin was announced as a new addition to the Russell 2000 Index in the 2025 Russell indices reconstitution, effective at market open on June 27, 2025.&nbsp;This inclusion also brings automatic entry into the broader Russell 3000 Index and associated growth and value style indexes.In early 2024, Kopin outlined a strategic shift, moving beyond its legacy role in microdisplay manufacturing to become an application-specific optical solutions provider.The company recently secured a $7.5 million multi-year contract to supply microdisplays from a Tier 1 Department of Defense prime contractor for augmented reality pilot Helmet Mounted Display Systems (HMDS). A group of small businesses reportedly sued Donald Trump over the new tariffs on Monday, alleging that the U.S. president used his powers unconditionally and that his decision could destroy local businesses.According to a CNBC&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/04/14/us-businesses-sue-to-block-trump-tariffs-say-trade-deficits-are-not-an-emergency.html">report</a>, five small businesses represented by Liberty Justice Center, a nonprofit legal aid group, filed the lawsuit in the U.S. Court of International Trade.Trump announced a base 10% tariff on all trading partners and a higher rate on several countries on April 2, causing shockwaves across global markets.His moves last week to pause specific tariffs for 90 days and lower the rate on smartphones, computers, and electronics — while temporarily relieving some industries — have frustrated businesses and investors looking for policy consistency.So far, several companies, including larger retail firms like Walmart and Nike, have called out a potential hit to their business, while scores of firms are scrambling to reconfigure their supply chain and import strategy.A staggering 145% import tariff on China, a key importer of gadgets such as the Apple iPhone and electronic parts for industrial machines to automobiles, is particularly concerning.In their lawsuit, the defendants said that Trump has illegally usurped Congress' power to levy tariffs by claiming that trade deficits with other countries constitute an emergency.They argued that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act ('IEEPA'), the statute the President invokes, does not authorize him to issue unilateral, worldwide tariffs.Furthermore, his claim that trade deficits with nations are an emergency "is a figment of his own imagination."The plaintiffs include VOS Selections, which imports and distributes small-production wines and spirits; FishUSA, a retail and wholesale e-commerce business for sportfishing tackle; and Genova Pipe, which makes plastic pipes and irrigation equipment.Others are MicroKits, which makes educational electronic kits and musical instruments, and cycling apparel company Terry Precision Cycling.Terry Cycling reportedly said its business would not survive from its projected tariff expenditure.For updates and corrections, email newsroom[at]stocktwits[dot]com.
