Billionaire investor Ray Dalio warned on Thursday that a September rate cut by the Federal Reserve, despite elevated inflation, could deepen risks of stagflation.“I fear that short-term rates and the dollar will go down, especially relative to gold, long-term interest rates will rise a bit, so the yield curve will become steeper, and stocks will do relatively poorly despite the easing,” Dalio wrote during&nbsp;a Reddit AMA responding to a question about the impact of a Fed rate cut in&nbsp;September. He added that such a shift would signal investors wanting to rotate out of debt into alternative stores of wealth. Dailo said that the move would also indicate that the Fed is “in a bind” and that the risk of stagflation was rising.The&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/DXY">U.S. Dollar Index</a> (DXY) has declined by more than 2% so far this year and by nearly 10% over the past 12 months.&nbsp;On Thursday afternoon, DXY was trading up 0.2% with retail sentiment on Stocktwits trending in ‘bullish’ territory over the past day.&nbsp;Meanwhile, the&nbsp;<a href="http://stocktwits.com/symbol/GLD">SPDR Gold Shares ETF</a> (GLD) has gained 33% this year and more than 40% over the past 12 months. However, retail sentiment around QQQ on Stocktwits dipped to ‘extremely bearish’ from ‘bearish’ territory over the past day. Answering a separate question on strategist Peter Zeihan’s view that China faces an inevitable collapse within the next decade, Dalio stated he wouldn't bet on it any more than he would bet on the United States' collapse over the next decade. “I think it's not smart to place that bet because they both have big strengths and big weaknesses. Ray Dalio Warns Fed Rate Cut In September Could Trigger Stagflation Risk

The billionaire investor predicts a weaker dollar, a steeper yield curve, and stocks doing relatively poorly despite the easing.

Analysts believe that gold mining stocks will continue to rally this year, despite recent outperformance compared to bullion, after years of tepid growth.The VanEck Gold Miners ETF (GDX) has soared 89% this year, outperforming the bullion’s near 35% rise this year. Shares of Newmont, the world's largest gold miner, have nearly doubled, while those of Barrick have surged 72%.“The outperformance of miners relative to the metal is something that really only started in earnest in 2025,” said investor Tim Seymour at CNBC, adding that mining stocks have consistently lagged behind gold prices over the past few years, primarily due to inflation.“Part of the outperformance here is the operational leverage in their business,” Seymour added while noting that gold miners have managed to rein in costs. “Inflation for global miners of everything, but for gold miners, maybe even more so.”The decline in costs has followed industry-wide efforts to adopt automation due to a labor shortage. In July, Newmont said its all-in sustaining costs, the industry benchmark gauge for expenses, decreased about 4% to $1,593 per gold ounce in the second quarter, compared to the previous three months.“I think that the market is largely underweight,” Seymour said. ‘Don’t Sell’ Gold Miner Stocks Now — Analysts See More Upside After Recent Surge

The VanEck Gold Miners ETF (GDX) has soared 89% this year, outperforming the bullion’s near 35% rise this year.

Goldman Sachs analysts believe that gold prices may surge to nearly $5,000 per ounce if the Federal Reserve’s independence is compromised and investors shift a small portion of their holdings from Treasuries into bullion.“A scenario where Fed independence is damaged would likely lead to higher inflation, lower stock and long-dated bond prices, and an erosion of the dollar’s reserve-currency status,” the investment bank’s analysts noted, according to a Bloomberg <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-09-04/goldman-sachs-says-gold-could-surge-if-fed-s-credibility-damaged">report.</a>The bank reportedly outlined several different scenarios for the yellow metal, including a baseline forecast for a rise to $4,000 an ounce by mid-2026, a so-called tail-risk scenario of $4,500, and an estimated jump to $5,000 if just 1% of the privately owned U.S. Treasury market were to shift to gold.“Gold remains our highest-conviction long recommendation in the commodities space,” the analysts stated.The Federal Reserve has come under attack from U.S. President Donald Trump for not lowering the benchmark interest rates, which Trump believes are hurting economic growth.
