During the 2018–2019 cycle, that metric fell to 63.8% before the crypto winter set in. “The current picture is different,” he wrote.&nbsp;According to him, the market is experiencing severe internal compression in profitability, but it is still far from a true structural reset. “As long as the long-term average holds near 87.5%, this is better described as a prolonged cyclical correction with elevated two-way volatility, rather than a full bearish-phase reset,” Adler wrote.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Short Covering Supports Bitcoin Price, Not Fresh Demand</h2>JDK Analysis also suggested that Bitcoin may be showing a false show of strength. It noted that spot markets are seeing active selling, while futures data showed aggressive buying largely driven by short covering rather than new long positions, which has helped keep prices supported near current levels.&nbsp;In a&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/The_JDK99/status/2039250945788325909?s=20">post</a> on X, JDK said that as short positions unwind, the temporary bid supporting prices could fade, leaving the market exposed to continued selling pressure. Roughly $17 billion worth of digital asset options, including approximately $14.5 billion in Bitcoin, expired on crypto derivatives exchange Deribit. Options are contracts that give traders the right to buy or sell Bitcoin at a set price on a specific date. When contracts of this size expire, traders adjust or close their positions, which can push prices sharply in either direction.Despite the expiry, Bitcoin's open interest on Deribit rose 2.38%,indicating that new positions were opened to replace those that expired.The expiry compounded an already pressured market. Approximately $300 million in long positions, bets that Bitcoin's price would rise, were liquidated over 24 hours, compared to only $50 million on the other side, according to market data. This marked the fifth significant liquidation wave in roughly 10 days, with multiple sessions seeing forced selling approaches or exceeding the $300 million mark.&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/coins/bitcoin">Bitcoin</a> was trading at $66,273, down by over 2% over the past 24 hours. The last time was from August 2018 to January 2019, dubbed once one of the most brutal crypto winters the market has seen.&nbsp;<h2 class="st-heading-2">Crypto Liquidations Top $450 Million In 24 Hours</h2>The drop in Bitcoin’s price and the overall cryptocurrency market falling below $2.4 trillion triggered over $450 million liquidations, with $400 million in long bets wiped out over the last 24 hours. Bitcoin led the liquidation wave with $183 million of forced unwinds, followed by Ethereum (ETH) at $124 million.&nbsp;Among the top 10 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization, Solana (SOL) and Cardano (ADA) took a bigger hit than Bitcoin.&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/coins/solana">Solana’s price</a> dropped more than 5% to around $83 while&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/coins/cardano">Cardano’s price</a> fell 4.5% to around $0.24. Nationally, electricity prices have also increased by&nbsp;7% due to the rise of AI data centers and pressure on electric grids, Fox News&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.foxbusiness.com/economy/americans-hit-soaring-electricity-bills-price-hikes-outpace-inflation-nationwide">reported</a> last month.&nbsp;Electricity prices rose from 12.82 cents per kilowatt-hour to 13.72 cents, which can make it more expensive for mining companies to operate.&nbsp; When fewer miners participate, Bitcoin's protocol automatically lowers the difficulty, which helps maintain the timing of block production.
